Scope and Contents
Collection of maps accumulated and donated by David Milbank Challis (1941-2019) and donated to Cambridge University Library in May 2017. David was a graphic designer who worked for HMSO then moved to The Museum of London where he helped set up the new Docklands Museum. He later went freelance, worked for Cambridge University, wrote, lectured, and pursued his many interests including railway history with the Great Eastern Railway Society and map-making as a founder member of the Charles Close Society (for the study of Ordnance Survey maps). Also founder of Industrialogical Associates, a private reserach group for the comparative study of railway history, and co-creator, with Andy Rush, of the 'Railway Record of the British Isles', a historical database of the infrastructure of the railways.
