Biographical / Historical
The Straits Settlements Association was created by a number of ex-Straits Settlements residents in London on 31 January 1868. Many members were involved in commerce, and the association sought to protect the Straits Settlements’ economic and political interests by petitioning the imperial government. Later in 1868, local branches were established in Singapore and Penang.
