Scope and Contents
Correspondence relating to the historian James de Vere Allen’s research into the Malayan Civil Service, the history of Malayan politics and government, and treaties and documents affecting the states of Malaya. The file includes letters from Hugh Bryson, who followed up Allen’s queries with his contacts. Bryson’s research notes include lists of members of the Malayan Civil Service who served during the First and Second World Wars, and who became prisoners of war or civilian internees during 1942-1945. The file also contains comments upon a draft version of Allen’s monograph on British rule in Malaya by Bryson, M.C. Hay, and E.V.G. Day, and the author’s response (circa 100 sheets).
