Scope and Contents

Burney's translation of documents (15 sheets) relating to the censuses of 1783 and 1826 containing:

Number of houses, taxable & untaxable, in each district of Burma, as returned by Census of 1783, and by that of 1826

List of number of houses liable to public or military service in the different Shan States or Districts subject to the King of Ava, as taken about the year 1800 by the present Kyi Wungyee's father the Myen Wungyee.

Number of houses in the three municipal cities, Ava, Amarapura and Tsagaing, and in the villages within the jurisdiction of each as delivered . . . In Jan 1827.

Burney used these sources to compile a 'Census of the Population of the Kingdom of Ava as taken in the Burman Year 1145 AD 1783, and as revised in 1188 AD 1826', which formed the foundation for the article 'On the Population of the Burman Empire'. It was first published in the ‘Journal of the Statistical Society’, vol. 4 (1842), 335-47, and reprinted in the ‘Journal of the Burma Research Society’, vol. 31, part 1 January 1941, 19-32.
