Correspondence on Siam, 1820 - 1830
Scope and Contents
This series contains twenty-one letters from the Siamese Government to Captain Henry Burney. RCMS 65/5/2-11 relate to his tenure as Envoy from the Governor General of India to the Siamese Court (1825-26). RCMS 65/5/12-21 date from his work in the civil administration of the Tenasserim Division of coastal Burma. Nineteen letters are ‘kradat phlao', traditional Siamese documents written in pencil on a thin paper made from the bark of the strebleus asper. Most consist of several sheets of paper glued together, with the seal of the author generally impressed upon the splices, and appearing at the end of the document as signature. The listing includes brief (but not comprehensive) summaries of individual letters and references to those published in ‘The Burney Papers’ (Bangkok, 1910-14).
