Biographical / Historical

Timothy Cole (1852-1931), wood engraver, was born in London and emigrated to America as a child. He developed his reputation by engraving old masters in the galleries of Europe. His engraving of Lord Heathfield was made from a painting of 1787 by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), portrait-painter. Reynolds was born on 16 July 1723 at Plympton-Earl's, Devon. He was apprenticed to Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) in 1740, and painted portraits in London and Plymouth, 1743-1749. After studying for three years in Italy, he established his reputation working in London during the 1750s. Reynolds was the first President of the Royal Academy in 1768, and was knighted in 1769. He died on 23 February 1792 at his home in Leicester Fields, London. George Augustus Eliott (1717-1790), first Baron Heathfield, was born on 25 December 1717 at Stobs. He attended Leyden University and the French military college of La Fère. After serving as a volunteer in the Prussian army, 1735-1736, he received a commission as an field engineer in the English army. He served in the Austrian War of Succession, 1742-1748, and was appointed aide-de-camp to George II in 1756. Eliott distinguished himself as Colonel of the 1st Light Horse in Germany, 1759-1761, and was made Major-General in 1759. He was second in command under the Earl of Albemarle during the Cuban expedition, and Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Ireland, 1774-1775. He was appointed Governor of Gibraltar in 1775, which he defended against D'Arzon and the Spanish army, 1779-1783. Eliott was created Baron Heathfield of Gibraltar in 1787. He died on 6 July 1790 at Aix-la-Chapelle.
