Biographical / Historical

Raithby, Lawrence and Company Ltd, Leicester and London, is a commercial printing firm. The painting featured in the postcard is by Thomas Jones Barker (1815-1882) who was born in Bath. Barker was educated in art by his father, the painter Thomas Barker (1769-1847), and studied in Paris, 1834-1845, where he exhibited his work at the Salon. He returned to England in 1845 where he developed a reputation as a painter of portraits and military scenes and exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1870 he travelled to the continent and made sketches of the fighting in the Franco-German war. He died in London on 27 March 1882.
