 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/RCMS 20/2/1/146

Scope and Contents

90 x 140 mm. A colour postcard written by Tymms and sent to his wife. It is addressed to: "Mrs F. Tymms, 14 Oxford terrace, Hyde Park, London W2, England."

The Caption on the postcard reads: "Hermit Rim Road is a driveway 30 feet wide, built of crushed stone rolled to a smooth hard surface and sprinkled with crude oil, and leads from El Tovar Hotel to the head of Hermit Trail. From there a wide bridal path that can hardly be called a trail, of a comfortable grade and with substantial wall on the outer edge, leads into the Canyon. At the first level is Hermit Camp, maintained for those desiring to remain a while in the depths of the Canyon."

Tymms message reads: "In the Grand Canyon. 4/9/18. This is the trail I came down. The picture and description of the trail are designed not to put people off. It is not quite so good as that but it's perfectly safe. There is no one else in my party but the guide - a cowboy. I felt quite an explorer going off with my cavalcade of 3 mules (1 pack mule) and guide. Rode 18 miles through the forest yesterday. Love F."
