Conditions Governing Access

From the Fonds:

Certain personal records are closed to scholars for 80 years from the date of creation under data protection legislation. Restrictions are clearly indicated in individual catalogue entries. Digital records are in the process of being ingested into the University Library's preservation repository. There is currently no access to this material.

Biographical / Historical

In connection with the 300th anniversary of the chair in Chemistry established for G.F. Vigani in 1702 (renamed Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1944, BP 1702 Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1992 and Yusuf Hamied 1702 Professor of Chemistry in 2019), Dr C. Haley was employed as departmental archivist/historian, 2001-3. Alongside organising a symposium and editing the papers presented into a volume for publication, he was tasked with identifying and assembling archival records, locating historical objects, researching biographies of chair holders and others, and conducting oral history recordings with major figures in the field. The archival material assembled was incompletely accessioned and not catalogued as part of the project.

Arrangement

Several files with the same title and content have been amalgamated. File titles largely recorded as found. A quantity of papers marked 'for filing' but otherwise unsorted has been distrbuted among the relevant files. Dates provided with file titles are those of original records; copies are dated in the scope and contents note.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

It has not proved possible in several cases to identify the provenance of primary source material present in this series.

Related Materials

Other primary sources assembled by Dr Haley are catalogued elsewhere in the departmental archives. A list of classmarks of the 2024 transfer chiefly comprising records collected by him, is in the fonds level description.
