[Unknown], 1940
Scope and Contents
A short amateur film (1min 40sec) made in colour 16mm and showing several South East Asian women (and one man) parading in elegant costumes ranging from traditional qipao to Shanghainese cheongsam and 1940s European party dresses. It is highly possible that Malcolm MacDonald, a keen photographer, shot this film sometime during his posting as Commissioner-General for the United Kingdom in South East Asia (1948 - 1955). The film includes the following intertitles: 'Festival of Chinese Fashions'; 'Parade of Historic Chinese costumes showing origin of the present-day dresses'; 'Attractive Chinese Ladies model the "new look" in cheong-sams'. This is the only film in the Malcolm John MacDonald Collection held by Cambridge University Library.
