Scope and Contents
(1) ‘Etrennes ou conseils (avis) d’un homme de qualité à sa fille’; this is a translation into French of ‘Advice to a daughter’, which was printed among ‘Miscellanies of the late lord Marquess of Halifax’, London, 1700 (and see MSS Dd.06.15, Dd.09.42 and Dd.11.56); (2) an explanation of some of the statutes of Merton College, Oxford, written when Richard Lydal was Warden (1693-1704); (3) ‘A paraphrase on the song of the three children, in irregular stanzas’, a poem of 44 stanzas of about 20 lines each, beginning ‘Beings, who onely an existence have ...’, with the following addition to the title partially erased, ‘After the Pindaric way; recommended to all the lovers of religious poetry by a divine of the Church of England’; (4) ‘Travel: a pindarique ode’, in five stanzas of unequal length, beginning ‘Come, mighty muse, inspire my song ...’; (5) ‘D. Jungii oratio, cum Rector inauguraretur’; Imanius Junge, or Young, was a member of Exeter College, Oxford; (6) ‘In Reginæ obitum elegia’, a Latin poem written soon after 28 December 1694 beginning ‘Unde mali tantum hoc! quid peccavere Britanni?’; (7) ‘Therenos’, ‘A funerall song or elegie of ye right honnorable ladie, ye Ladie Isabel late countess dowager of Rutland, late wife to ye thrise noble Lord Edward Mannors’, who died 21 January 1605, 12 pages of about 20 lines each, beginning ‘O mournefull muse assist my doleful pen ...’; subjoined in the same handwriting is another elegy, entitled ‘Mnemosynon’, imperfect, addressed by the poet to his master ‘Robert Nicolson, merchant’, on the death of ‘dame Hellen Branch my verie good Ladie and Mrs’, who died 10 April 1594; between (7) and (8) have been inserted a few other pieces, chiefly English, covering 15 pages; (8) ‘Miscellanea quædam sua viro Rev. Dno. Dri. Moore humillime in manum tradit Edv. Hannes’, being a selection of Westminster School exercises, with a letter in Greek, signed Ἐδόαρδος ὁ Ἁννης and dated 1682, prefixed.
