Correspondence of Abraham Wheelocke, 1622-1641

Scope and Contents

'Letters from Sr Henr. Spelman, Mr Tho. Adams, Sr Symon Dewis, &c. to Mr Wheelocke, relating to several of their donations.' They are all original letters, retaining frequently the seal and the address. Contains: (1) Four letters, 1624-1632, one from Thomas Davies to Archbishop James Ussher and three from Wilhelm Bedwell of which at least two are to Abraham Wheelocke; (2) 36 letters, 1637-1640, from Sir Henry Spelman to Abraham Wheelocke, many concerning the study of Anglo-Saxon; (3) Four letters, 1632-1641, one from John Spelman to Abraham Wheelocke, two from John Clerke of which one is to a married friend (probably Wheelocke) and one to M. Olrye, Fellow and President of Clare Hall, and one from John Walden to Abraham Wheelocke giving an account of the death of Sir Henry Spelman, and with an order concerning an Anglo-Saxon lecture signed by John Cosin, vice-chancellor; (4) 32 letters, 1631-1640, mostly from Thomas Adams the founder of the Arabic professorship but including one from Thomas Adams the son; (5) 15 letters, 1622-1640, mostly to Abraham Wheelocke, the correspondents including Thomas Brockmann, John Foorthe, Thomas Hill, Gilbert Wigmore, John Boise, Thomas Rylæus, Richard Sackey, Simonds D'Ewes and R. R[obinson], schoolmaster of King's Lynn. One of the letters is a 'testimony' of the University of Cambridge, 1622, signed by John Gostlin, vice-chancellor, and 13 others, addressed to the mayor and aldermen of Lynn, that Wheelocke is well qualified to be master of the free school.
