Letters and theological notes, c 1680

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Gg.06.11

Scope and Contents

(1) A transcript of the letters which passed between Henry More and ‘Mr H. H.’, about the ‘Encheiridion metaphysicum’ of the former; begins ‘Honoured Sir, Soon after the receipt of your Enchiridion metaphysicum ...’. The letters are dated from August 1671 to March 1671/2. More’s are all dated from ‘C. C. C.’, i.e. Christ’s College, Cambridge. His correspondent writes from ‘P. G.’ near London; the surname has been filled up on f. 1 of the manuscript and is apparently ‘Harn’ or 'Hirn', but it has been run through with a pen. The letters chiefly contain corrections of More’s Latinity; (2) ‘Isaacus Vossius excellentissimo domino magno Anglicæ cancellario, de lite sua cum cum D. Heveninghamio’; begins ‘Quod iam pridem in vobis fuit ut litis quæ set cum D. Heveninghamio ...’; the letter is dated London, 25 May 1676; (3) theological notes, in a different hand, concerning ‘The general proposition to be proved in Mr Dodwell’s discourse of schism’, ‘Of purgatory and paradise, and the state and place of souls departed’, and ‘Of Moses’ law, and whether it required obedience absolutely perfect’.
