Collection of legal treatises and miscellaneous writings, seventeenth century
Scope and Contents
The items collected are written in different hands of the seventeenth century. Contains: (1) ‘Instructions for the mr of or wards and lyveries for the better authorisinge and directinge of him in the execucon of his office and performance of our service’, from the reign of King James I, in a contemporary hand; (2) a treatise on tenures, and ‘breifly of wardships, premier seisin, livery’, etc., in the same hand as no. 1; (3) ‘Curia wardorum’, being notes of cases in the court of wards, between 3 and 10 James I, in a contemporary hand; (4) ‘Regule pro liberacone et alienacone pro custodia et commissione’, being rules, in English, for liveries of lands, made 4 Edw. IV, in a sixteenth century hand; (5) reports of cases decided between 1 and 23 Hen. VII (‘ex libro Roberti Kiloway’) and between 22 and 29 Eliz. I, in Law-French, in the same hand as no. 4; (6) ‘Sir Francis Bacon’s charge at the sessions of the veirge’, in a seventeenth-century hand; (7) ‘Judge Doderidge his preamble to a charge at the sessions’, in the same hand as no. 6; (8) ‘A forme of the charge to be given by the steward att the houlding a court of survey’, of Lady Anne Compton’s manor of Exbury, in 35 articles of enquiry, in the same hand as no. 6; (9) a treatise on manors, beginning ‘This small trackt of mannors ...’, in a seventeenth-century hand; (10) ‘Letters pattent and graunts of mannors and lands, by King Henry the eight in the xxxviith yeare of his raigne’, being abstracts of grants made in various parts of the kingdom, in a sixteenth-century hand; (11) law readings of William Simonds, in French, in the summer vacation 3 Edw. VI, on statute 32 Hen. VIII. c. 28, on leases, in a sixteenth-century hand; (12) ‘Communications betweene Monsieur Du Moulin and Monsr Balzac’, consisting of copies of two letters of the former and one of the latter, occasioned by Balzac having presented Peter du Moulin with a copy of his ‘Prince’, in a contemporary hand.
