Discourses on the marriage of Edward Seymour, earl of Hertford, and Lady Catherine Grey, 1562
Scope and Contents
A collection of discourses relating to the case of ‘the marriage betweene the earle of Hertford and the lady Katheryn Gray’. All are original documents except no. 6. There is a table of contents from which the following titles are taken: (1) ‘A discourse written by Johannes Oldendorpius concerning the former mariage of Henry earle of Pembroke with the said Lady Katherine’; at the end is written (evidently in the autograph of Oldendorp, with his seal affixed): ‘Ita Johannes Oldendorpius, juris doctor, ex jure et equitate respondebat. Salvo meliore judicio’; (2) ‘One other discourse written by Jacobus Omphilius concerning the said mariage’; it bears his signature at the end; (3) ‘One other discourse written by three of the said doctors of the imperiall chamber of Spires, viz. Chilianus Sinapius, Marcus Ludovicus Ziegler, and Georgius Brunner, concerning the said marriage’; their signatures are subscribed; (4) ‘A lardge discourse made by Robert Beale concerning the mariage betweene the earle of Hertford and the Lady Katheryn Gray’; to this is subscribed the initials ‘R. B.’; (5) ‘One other lardge discourse written by fower doctors of the imperiall chamber of Spires, viz. Chilianus Sinapius, Marcus Ludovicus Ziegler, Georgius Brunner and Johannes Michaell Ficlerus, concerning the said mariage’; it bears their signatures at the end; (6) ‘The copie of one other discourse made by five doctors of the Universitie of Parris, concerning the said marriage’; the names of these doctors were Laurentius Riviere, Jacobus de la Croix, Joannes Ramatus, Petrus Pillaguetius and Martinus Gilbertus.
