Post Office and Exchange Building [Singapore], 1880 - 1889

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/BAM 10/27

Scope and Contents

273 x 207 mm. A view looking north across Fullerton Square with the Post Office and Exchange Building at the right and The Tan Kim Seng Memorial Fountain at the left. Part of the Cavenagh Bridge can be seen in the background. The Post Office was moved from its original site near Empress Place to this location (where Fort Fullerton had once stood) in 1874 and this building, erected in 1884, remained in 1924. The temporary building on Collyer Quay then housed the Post Office until the Fullerton Building was completed in 1928. The Exchange Building (which also housed the Chambers of Commerce and, from 1880, the Singapore Club) was designed by William Daniel Bayliss and opened in 1879. The construction of the fountain in the centre of the square was financed with money originally given by Tan Kim Seng to improve the Singapore water supply, and unveiled in May 1882. Behind the fountain are the premises of the watchmaker James Motion and Emmersons Billiard Hill and Tiffin Rooms.
