Scope and Contents

200 x 116 mm. Showing Sir Abdul HAMID HALIM SHAH, Sultan of Kedah, on the point of cutting the tape to open the new bridge. Beside him stands Alwyn Sidney HAYNES, acting British Adviser. Other figures in the group include Haji Sir Mohamed SHERIFF; the Regent of Kedah, Tuanku IBRAHIM; Syed Jan (?); Syed Mohamed IDID; Tuanku Johamed JAVA; and Tuanku BADLISHAH, later Sultan. The Kedah Annual Report (1926) gives this description: "The Wan Mat Saman Bridge which crosses the Kedah River at the entrance to Alor Star was completed by the end of the year at a total cost of $130,000, and was opened by his Highness the Sultan on the 3rd day of the new year (14th July 1926). The Bridge consists of 5 spans and totals 280 feet. The centre span is 80 feet. It is made entirely of reinforced concrete, the longest piles being 75 feet long, of which 48 are below the bed of the river".
