Residency, Kuala Lumpur, 1883 [?], 1883
Scope and Contents
163 x 110 mm. A general view of the Residency building, a two storey house with tiled roof and a colonade of pillars running round the house supporting the verandahs on the first floor. The pencilled caption is in Swettenhams hand, but there is some doubt about the date: it appears to be a later picture than BAM 4/8 which is dated (again by Swettenham) 1882-1883 and considerable alterations have been effected. The original Residency is recorded in the Selangor Annual Report for 1881 as being partially completed and the next reference to the building, in the 1884 report, states that outhouses attached to the Residency were destroyed in a storm and rebuilt during the course of the year. The building is not mentioned again until 1888 (Selangor Annual Report, 1888). It is likely that any substantial outgoings spent on the alterations would appear in the Annual Report and this lack makes it likely that this print shows the Residency. The date, therefore, would be 1888 at the earliest.
