301 x 217 mm. (mounted on board). A group portrait of Europeans posed in front of an atap house, and captioned on the print Pangkor 1874. This photograph has often been reproduced as a print taken during the signing of the Pangkor Engagement in January 1874 but this is certainly not so and there are several anomalous features which make a positive identification difficult. Beneath this copy of the print the figures are identified (l to r) as: Dr Anderson; Capn. Innes; Captn. Speedy; Sir F.A. Swettenham. Further research provides a few different identifications: 1. Dr Andrew Ferguson ANDERSON; Colonial Surgeon, Straits Settlements 1867-1880 (retired due to ill health). 2. Plow being in Government employment in the Straits Settlements Blue Books after 1873 and no mention of him accompanying any official tour of Perak. This is possibly explained by a suspicion that the photograph has been tampered with to a greater or lesser extent: McCallums foot appears in front of the chair behind which he stands in a physically impossible way; and the figure of Plow himself looks as if it might well have been pasted on to the original print at a later date. Another, more unlikely possibility, is that the figure is not Plow but Lieutenant Abbott, the only figure on the visit so far unidentified and of whom no portrait has been traced.
