Taiping from the Residency, 1875, 1875
Scope and Contents
246 x 168 mm. A view looking down the Residency Hill along rows of Chinese houses with atap roofs, with scrubland beyond and jungle in the distance. A note on the reverse of the print indicates that the houses are probably those running along Main Street. By the end of 1874 Taiping had a population of around 5000. The views of Swettenham, who visited the town in the same year are recorded in (eds Burns and Cowan 1975) and Journal of the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, vol 24, part 4, December 1951, p. 44. J.W.W. Birch who also visited the town on this occasion comments on the Chinese houses and carpenters. These can be seen in (ed Burns, 1975, p. 61).
