Scope and Contents

Essay topics:

Class A

1 Is what is lawful always right? And is what is right always lawful?
2 Either looking back at what has happened in your country in the time since your parents were born, does the future look good? Or write a short story of Life, the Universe & Everything.
3 Is the indigenous culture of your country worth preserving?
4 Does English allow you to be fully yourself or do you also need another language? Or what are the advantages and disadvantages of English being the language of the Commonwealth?
5 The sweetest moment.

Class B

1 Colours.
2 The difference I make.
3 In all Commonwealth societies, customs and traditions help people to navigate through life. In your experience, does this statement ring true?
4 Crossing the boundary.
5 Water.

Class C

1 Choose a well-known proverb or saying that is used in your own or another Commonwealth country. Illustrate what it means and/or how it originated.
2 You have just been elected to an important position in your school or community. Write an acceptance speech thanking your supporters and explaining what you will do.
3 How hard is it to keep a secret?
4 A person (perhaps you) changes places with an animal for a day. Describe the day from the person or animal’s point of view.
5 Write a story ending with the words ‘...and then there were none’.

Class D

1 Write an adventure involving yourself and the characters of a favourite book.
2 You have to look after your younger brother or sister for the day. What happens?
3 Write a poem or description of your local market.
4 Write a letter to your local newspaper suggesting how your community could celebrate Commonwealth Day.
5 Write a story that ends ‘...and that is why I didn’t go to school yesterday’.

Commonwealth Question

The theme of Commonwealth Day 2006 is ‘Health and Vitality - the Commonwealth Challenge’. Either discuss this theme in relation to your own country or write a story/account exploring its personal significance in the lives of ordinary people.
