Correspondence and papers
Scope and Contents
Political and personal correspondence, including letters from most leading political figures of the time, Joseph Chamberlain, the Lord Justice Gerald Fitzgibbon, Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, third Marquis of Salisbury, and Sir Henry Drummond Wolff. The correspondence with Gerald Fitzgibbon sheds much light on Churchill's own career. Comprises letters written to Churchill by political and personal associates, and copies of letters written by him, covering the period 1870 - 1895, particularly covering the periods immediately preceding and following the Home Rule Bill of 1886.
The current catalogue is based on the original handwritten catalogue produced by Blenheim Palace Library, the date of which is unknown but may derive from the early 20th century. The online catalogue has not been substantially updated and, as such, may contain language and descriptions which are outdated, inaccurate or inappropriate, particularly the spelling of place names in India, Burma, Egypt and other British colonies, and the use of the terms 'native', 'natives' or 'native administration' to refer to Indian peoples and the structure of colonial administration.
