The entry for 6 June notes that Captain Cook had received Foxon’s hydrometer or patent log-reel from Captain Rice of the Dutch East India ship at St. Helena [RGO 14/58: 174]; the distances run from the ship are measured from this in the log book thereafter, with comments on its performance.
