Log entries for September, 1773-09-01 - 1773-09-30
Scope and Contents
Entries for 1-16 September take the form of three short summaries, with daily entries provided thereafter. On 1 September, Wales records that the Resolution travelled from Matavai Bay to Huahine Island, where he made observations [RGO 14/58: 58]. The Resolution left the Society Islands in mid-September, travelling towards New Zealand via the Tongan islands. On 23 September, Wales describes two islands which Cook named Hervey’s Islands, which appeared ‘exceedingly beautiful’ and uninhabited (a map is included). Another entry for that day concerns rationing [RGO 14/58: 60], while that for 29 September reads, ‘The bread got up on deck to air, being grown very bad and full of vermin’ [RGO 14/58: 61v].
