Scope and Contents
These were mostly taken on shore while the ship was at anchor. Early entries include additional notes: the 12 April entry describes Bayly’s difficulty locating a suitable spot to take observations [RGO 14/57: 27r], while the entry for 24 April concerns his transit instruments [RGO 14/57: 27v].
Included are: observations on the going of the astronomical clock on Observatory Island, Queen Charlotte Sound [RGO 14/57: 31v]; comparisons of Watch No. 1 with the astronomical clock [RGO 14/57: 32r]; meridian altitudes of the sun, moon and stars [RGO 14/57: 32v]; observations of the distances of the nearest limbs of the sun and moon for finding the longitude of his observatory [RGO 14/57: 33r-34r]; observations of Amplitudes, Azimuth and for finding the variation [RGO 14/57: 34v]; observations of the dip of the magnetic needle [RGO 14/57: 35r] and on the tides [RGO 14/57: 35v-36v]; and observations of altitudes of the sun taken while at anchor in Queen Charlotte Sound [RGO 14/57: 37r].
