Observations taken mostly at sea, 1772-11-23 - 1773-04-06
Scope and Contents
The daily observations at sea resume from 23 November, after the Adventure left the Cape of Good Hope, until the ship’s arrival in Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand, on 7 April 1773. Observations taken for 9-10 March 1773 were made within sight of Van Diemen’s Land [Tasmania] and entries for 12-14 March relate to observations on the tides taken on shore there. An entry for 28 March 1773 describes an accident in which Bayly's thermometer broke while out testing the current and water temperature [RGO 14/57: 24v]. Entries for 3-6 April cover observations made off the coast of New Zealand, at the entrance to Cook’s Straight and in Admiralty Bay.
