Entries for August, 1772-08-02 - 1772-08-31
Scope and Contents
Bayly does not keep a log of the three days spent at Madeira, beginning his daily entries for the month on 2 August when the ship set sail again, bound for the Cape of Good Hope via the Cape Verde islands. Upon leaving Madeira, he records that their small cutter was caught in a storm and lost its oars, mast, and sails. He notes that they sighted the island of Bonavista [Boa Vista, Cape Verde] on 11 August, passing the island of St. Iago [São Tiago] the following day where they moored at Porto Praya Bay. A number of entries include lunar observations from which he calculates longitude from Greenwich. An entry for 25 August records the death upon the ship of a midshipman named Lambright, whose body was committed to the deep that evening [RGO 14/56: 12r]. On 29 August, Bayly records that a marine named Donald Stuart was punished with twelve lashes for fighting and contempt of his officer [RGO 14/56: 13r].
