Library: catalogues, 1557 - 1808
Scope and Contents
Comparison of Luard’s contents list with the records, now loose papers taken out of their guard book, reveals many inaccuracies. The following list is extensively corrected. Contents:
1. [Printed transcript of] list of books from the Registrum Librorum et Scriptorum, made in or before 1424;
2. [Printed transcript of] list, made in 1473, from the same [items 1-2 were published in Transactions of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society 1862, pp.239-78, by H. Bradshaw, having been copied by him from the original in the Registry];
3. Catalogue made 1556-7;
4. Catalogue made in 1573;
5. Catalogue made in 1574;
6. Catalogue made in 1582;
7. Fragment of a list of articles in [the University chapel] and elsewhere belonging to the University. [This is a draft/copy of the final section of the inventory catalogued as 10-11a];
8. Extract [by Registrary Tabor] from Dr Perne's will giving 40s to the Library Keeper. The will is dated 25 Feb. 1588/9;
8a. Extract from the will of Dr Perne giving his coins etc. to the Library;
9. Articles for the office of Keeping the University Library , 1582;
10. Table of the books in the University Library by John Frickley, 1582;
11. Catalogue of ‘Divers other parcells, things and furniture’ belonging to the University [including in the Consistory and Regent House; probably originally forming one book with the items catalogued as 9-10];
11a. Receipt for weight issued to the University, 1588;
12(1). List of books bought with the legacies of Dr Fox and Alexander Ross, 1656;
12(2). Duplicate of this;
13. Books delivered by Mr Field to Dr Wilford for the Library, 1667;
14. List of books sent into the Rustat Library, 1672;
15. Accounts of the books bought with the money received for the duplicates in Bishop Hacket’s Library, 1673;
16. List of registered books sent Feb. 1725/6;
17(1). Catalogue of the books and other contents in Mr Lewis’s Bibliotheca Orientalis, 1726;
17(2). Another catalogue of these;

18. Catalogue (printed) of the duplicates in the Royal Library to be sold March 1742/3, with the prices and purchasers names in MS [now catalogued as Cam.d.742.2];
19. Table of the classes and numbers of books in the Library, before 1748;
20. A similar table, June 1748;
21. List of books wanting in the [King’s] Library at the general survey by the Syndicks, 13 July 1748 (printed);
22. List of the books lost in 1777, all of which except 4 were recovered, 23 June 1808;
23. List of books missing at the inspection of 1846, 48, 50, 51 (printed) [now catalogued as UA ULIB 7/6/1/1].
