Scope and Contents
A set of drawings of the Photographic Zenith Tube [PZT], originally rolled together and labelled, 'TA PZT [Photographic Zenith Tube], 1st system Nos. not m/f'. They include drawings of V, W, X, Y and Z sized sheets, Z being the smallest.
A PZT is a specialised transit telescope with which the latitude and longitude of its position can be measured with a precision of a few hundredths of a second of arc and a few milliseconds of time respectively. Its main uses by the Royal Observatory Herstmonceux were for more accurate time determination and for variation of latitude measurements. Operations with the PZT began in 1955 and continued until 30 June 1984.
