Blue notebook presented to Ida Farrer, 1873 - 1880
Scope and Contents
Blue leather bound notebook embossed with 'Ida Farrer, November 7th 1873'. The notebook was presented to Ida Farrer on her 19th birthday by Emma Schau (1822-1898), a Danish citizen employed in the Farrer household as a governess, with an inscription in French which has been translated as follows:
I am presenting you this little album, my beloved Ida, as a souvenir of the five years of pure joy and happiness that you gave me. It is aimed at enclosing the beautiful and great thoughts which struck you in your readings and that you would like to remember to better assimilate them afterwards.
“I looked upwards” says our Dante, and I place these words on your heart, sending you kisses, with all my affection and love.
Inserted in the notebook are several pages of notes. The language used is predominantly French but also includes English and German.
