Yapp 36'' Reflector and Dome B, c.1955-1977
Scope and Contents
The Yapp 36" Reflector was first proposed as a gift to the Royal Observatory from cigarette manufacturer, William Johnstone Yapp in March 1931. It was commissioned from Sir Howard Grubb Parsons & Co. soon after and a new 34 foot dome was built to house it. Usage stopped during the Second World War and recommenced in 1946. At the end of 1955 it was taken out of Greenwich and reconditioned before being erected in Dome B, Herstmonceux, where it was used from August 1958.
