The prints and negatives consists of the following:

- Staff members, group and individual portraits, generally well captioned.

- Events, including social events such as Christmas parties and retirements and official events such as seminars held at the Unit.

- Interior and exterior photographs of the Unit premises at 15 Chaucer Road.

- Research, experiment and testing equipment, including members of staff and experiments in action.

- Copies of published images, presumably for use as teaching aids or displays.

The images are in mixed formats, including celluloid strip negatives, celluloid quarter plate negatives, glass plate negatives, 35mm photographic slides and photographic prints. The single image negative sheets and 35mm photographic slides have very little contextual information beyond their assigned classmark.


Much of this photographic material was taken by professional photographers employed by the Unit or the MRC. Unofficial photographs taken by individuals were later offered to the Unit. In recent years, most of the photographic material has been captured and added to the archive by the Unit Librarian.
