Royal Society inquiry into gas reservoir of the Gas Light Company, 1809 - 1814
Scope and Contents
The Royal Society established a committee in 1814 to enquire "into the situation and state of the reservoir of gas belonging to the Gas Light Company". Included amongst the papers is a letter concerning an explosion at the Royal Powder Mills in Faversham, Kent on 20 February 1793 [RGO/14: 173]; correspondence relating to an explosion at a timber seasoning yard in Woolwich on 30 December 1812 and the resultant casualties and damage, including reports on the possible causes of the accident [RGO 14/10: 174-175] & [RGO 14/10: 180] & [RGO 14/10: 189-192]; a letter concerning an accident at the Gas Light Company's premises in Peter Street, London in [December 1813] [RGO 14/10: 176-179]; and a draft and final report of the Royal Society inquiry [RGO 14/10: 194-209]
