Humphry Smith Photographs, 1928 - 1976
Scope and Contents
Photographs of the clocks and instruments of the Time Department and of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, Abinger and Herstmonceux, collated by Humphry Smith.
The photographs are arranged in four series: Greenwich, Abinger, Herstmonceux, and other (including images from Australia and images where identification of exact location is unclear). They include press images by the BBC, London News Agency, Planet News, Grubb Parsons, General Post Office, etc. as well as photographs taken by RGO staff. Three Ministry of Information photographs of the Time Department at Abinger are attributed to Cecil Beaton. Where no attribution is given, it is assumed that the photograph was taken by Smith or is an official RGO image.
