Drawings of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich by Elizabeth Smith, Caroline Smith, and Richarda Airy, 1838 - 1845
Scope and Contents
A set of black and white pencil drawings of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and a plan of the same. Most are the work of Elizabeth Smith, the sister-in-law of Astronomer Royal, George Airy through his marriage to Richarda Smith. Airy married Richarda Smith in 1830. One drawing, RGO 116/3/10, initialled 'R.A.' appears to be the work of Richarda Airy. A set of titles listing many of these drawings, handwritten by George Airy in 1839, is catalogued at RGO 116/3/16. These titles have been matched with the images in this series as best as possible, with the Airy titles used in the catalogue descriptions.
