Scope and Contents
Contents of a file so titled and ‘closed 21.5.75’. Includes enquiries about constellation locations and distances, recent astronomical discoveries such as Comet Kohoutek, sundials, sunspots, horology, time, meteorology, telescopes, observed astronomical phenomena including Comet Bennett, requests for images and copies of publications, etc. Many letters are from amateur astronomers.
Also included are letters fact-checking astronomical themes in Thomas Hardy’s ‘Two on a Tower’, a letter from architects seeking advice on building an observatory for the Sultan of Oman, a letter from an astronomical society in Ghana seeking advice on what to observe, and a letter requesting irrefutable proof that the Earth goes around the Sun.
Unusual entries include an account of a haunting, with a related query about date of the full moon, and a set of eleven ‘reports’ on ‘Life on other Planets’ reputedly communicated by the author (Freida Hohenner Parker)’s late son ‘in spirit life’.
Consecutive numbering is the archivist’s.
