Scope and Contents

Contents of a file so titled. Requests for information, leaflets and brochures on the Observatory, astronomy and time, from schoolchildren, teachers and the general public.

Includes letters requesting including information on the planets, the Moon, computer operations at the Observatory, the Perseids, comets (including Comet Kohoutek and Comet Bennett), the Earth’s rotation, the Isaac Newton Telescope, the Skylab project, solar prominences, the cause of the ‘Dark Day’ experienced in the USA in 1790, whether 12 noon is a.m. or p.m., the possibility of life on other planets, advice on telescopes for amateur use, etc., and information on the identification of observed astronomical phenomena including a partial eclipse of the moon (June 1974).

Also includes letters on non-astronomical topics such as meteorology, and a letter requesting information on the position of the ‘’planet Metropolis’’ by someone who had seen the film of the same name.

Consecutive numbering is the archivist’s.
