Scope and Contents
Contents of a file so titled. Requests for further information, photographs or literature on astronomy, space, the Observatory, Herstmonceux Castle, and Time. Many are from children doing school projects, students or teachers seeking educational resources, or amateur astronomers.
The letters include requests for information on subjects such solar eclipses, the shortest day of the year for 1799, the age of the Earth, space travel, the Isaac Newton Telescope, visiting the Observatory, the discoveries of Pluto, Uranus and Neptune, the Apollo moon landings, nebulae, spectra, spiral galaxies, the use of solar energy, Halley’s Comet, ‘The Observatory’ magazine, lunar occultations of stars, Comet Kohoutek, telescopes, explosive charges laid on the moon by the Apollo mission, lunar halos, and leap seconds, etc.
There are also letters describing observed astronomical phenomena, including shooting stars and sightings of Comet Bennett, and some submissions of personal theories or musings for evaluation (sometimes unintelligible).
Consecutive numbering is the archivist’s.
