Scope and Contents
Photographs, photocopies, photostats and microfilms of a wide range of papers relating to the Royal Observatory or to individuals or subjects connected to it. The majority of the material relates to Nevil Maskelyne. This includes a large set of Maskelyne's correspondence (RGO 35/3-96), including letters he received from French correspondents; correspondence of family members, including his brother, Captain Edmund Maskelyne, and his daughter, Margaret Maskelyne; and letters he sent to colleagues and friends, including a large set of letters to Sir Joseph Banks. There are account books kept under Maskelyne at the Royal Observatory (RGO 35/134-136) and a set of his volumes of miscellaneous papers (RGO 35/137-148). There is also a series of letters written by David Kinnebrook to his father David and other members of his family, 1794-1796, which describe Kinnebrook's life as Maskelyne's assistant at the Greenwich Observatory (RGO 35/97-128). The rest of the series includes, among other material, copies of the letters of Observatory staff and other correspondents, and a set of microfilms (RGO 35/171-184), including the papers of the Herschel family (RGO 35/170).
