Scope and Contents

Papers for the meeting of the Astronomy Sub-Committee of the Research Grants Committee, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, at State House, London, on 20 February 1964. At the start of the folder are eleven sections, preceded by an index, which include a 'Report on recommendations on applications for special research grants submitted in November, 1963'; revised terms of reference of the Research Grants Committee and Sub-Committees; 'The Robbins Report and the Research Grants Committee's future policy'; 'Paper from the Chemistry Sub-Committee on Funds for Research'; a financial statement; the retirement rota of the Research Grants Committee and Sub-Committees; the Revised Draft Report of the Radio Astronomy Sub-Committee; a survey by Professor F. Hoyle of research in optical and theoretical astronomy and the needs of theoretical astronomy; a table of 'Supplementary Awards and Revisions of Grants under Office Authority'; and a table of 'Applications for grants for special researches'.

The rest of the folder contains supplementary papers. Much of this material consists of Special Research Grant applications for work relating to, among other subjects, 'Astronomical applications for a Michaelson Stellar Interferometer', 'Maintenance of the Mark II and III radio telescopes', 'Measurement of OH absorption in interstellar gas clouds', 'Development of an X-band radiometer', 'Reflection effect in spectroscopic binaries', 'Photoelectric UBV photometry of 400G and K type stars' and 'The peculiar compositions of the magnetic stars'. Other items include notes on the Institute for Theoretical Astronomy and Commander R.F. Tolson's 'Report on Telescope Maintenance and Engineering Staff Requirements 1963'.
