Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous notes and circulars regarding, among other subjects, a proposal to measure proper motions relative to extra-galactic nebulae at Herstmonceux; proper motion studies in the fields of M67 and 47 Tucanae; the possibilities of a reflecting astrolabe; immediate staff requirements at the Nautical Almanac Office; the relationship between various techniques for obtaining proper motions; the usage of the I.C.T. 1909 Computer for research and development; wind effects on photographic zenith tube observations; reports on vacation students, 1968; visits to the Royal Greenwich Observatory by delegates to the International Astronomical Union 14th General Assembly in Brighton, 1970; a proposed backup programme for direct observations of peculiar galaxies at the prime focus of the Isaac Newton Telescope; the Astronomer Royal's report for the Whitley Council, December 1969; observing in Spain; the N.A.T.O. course on stellar evolution and variable stars, 1970; 'Operation Synchran'; collaboration in astronomy with South Africa; introduction of a new time system and modification to the B.B.C. 6-pips signal; lists of night observing duties; and various other matters relating to the day-to-day running of the Observatory.
