Correspondence and papers regarding the Festival of Britain, 1951, relating mainly to the exhibits to be shown. The papers include the following items:
Correspondence regarding the setting up of a Scientific Advisory Panel on Astronomy, 1948-1949, including letters from R.O. Redman requesting A. Hunter to act as the Royal Astronomical Society representative; letters from I. Cox, Director, Science, Festival of Britain 1951, to A. Hunter, enclosing a summary of requirements for Scientific Advisory Panels and a Time Chart; letters from Panel members, E.H. Lightfoot, Cambridge Observatories, and H.H. Plaskett of Oxford University Observatory to Hunter, Chairman; and Hunter's correspondence with J.B. Penrose Angwin, for the Director, Science, on meetings and minutes.
Correspondence between A. Hunter and J.B.P. Angwin, 1949-1951, regarding astronomical exhibits, including the orrery, the removal of the Time Ball from Greenwich, the British Interplanetary Society's suggestion on space flight, lunar echo apparatus, the Solar System model and the disposal of exhibits; Hunter's notes and suggested captions for exhibits; a copy of a script based on 'Nature of the Universe' by Fred Hoyle; and brief and display treatment of the Dome of Discovery Outer Space Section, August 1950, prepared by the Design Research Unit.
Correspondence between A. Hunter and H.R. Calvert, Science Museum, 1949, concerning Hunter's broadcast on the Moon, photographs of the 200-inch telescope at Pasadena, the Mount Wilson 100-inch telescope and the Schmidt camera, and Festival plans.
A. Hunter's correspondence with Austin Frazer, Design Research Unit, and H. Spencer Jones, 1950-1951, regarding the loan of Halley's transit instrument to the Festival by the Royal Greenwich Observatory, with a sketch of the instrument and a working drawing showing the method of mounting, the replica of the Greenwich Time Ball and other models, with a list of photographs required for Dome of Discovery displays.
A. Hunter's letter to H. Spencer Jones, October 1950, concerning the demonstration of radar reflections from the Moon and the required charts; and manuscript comments by D.H. Sadler addressed to H. Spencer Jones, with extracts from 'The Times', 26 and 27 October.
Letters to A. Hunter from D.H.O. John, Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, 1950-1951, concerning the loan of prints illustrating the value of photography in astronomical work to the Society, with Hunter's pencilled list of prints sent.
Letters received by A. Hunter from E. Atkin, Design Research Unit, 1951, concerning the loan of negatives and the transport and delivery of the Halley transit instrument to the Dome of Discovery, with reference to the sidereal clock at Abinger.
Correspondence with H.H. Chambers and F. Blick, Mactaggart and Evans Ltd, Sondes Place Research Institute, 1951, on the model orrery design; a data chart for the mechanised solar system (Drawing M E 1235) and proposed display model of the Earth and Moon (Drawing M E 1235); and reprints from 'The Engineer', 22 June 1951, and the 'Horological Journal', August 1951, on the solar system display and 'Festival Orrery'.
Various papers, 1949-1950, including 'Content of Stars', a summary by J.B.P. Angwin of verbal information from F. Hoyle, Cambridge, 12 December 1949; 'The Corona' by M.A. Ellison, 3 May 1950; and 'Solar Spectroscopy - the analysis of sunlight', an unsigned typed paper, with pencilled notes and diagrams.
Agenda, minutes and other papers of the Astronomy Advisory Panel, 1949-1950, including minutes of the first meeting, 25 February 1949; minutes of the second meeting, 6 April 1949, with notes on preliminary proposals for the presentation of astronomy and allied subjects; minutes of the third meeting, 15 July 1949, with an aide-memoire for the Chairman and Executive Officer, the 'Dome Synoptical Script for Outer Space'; brief cover ideas for the documentary films 'Radio Astronomy' and 'The St Andrew's Telescope' and notes on 'Astronomy in the Science Exhibition'; 'Modification of Plans for the Science Exhibition at South Kensington', 9 September 1949; notes on the Moon; press release, 16 November 1949; and press conference statement on the 'Science and Technology in the Festival of Britain', 25 January 1950.
