Scope and Contents

[The 'Holloway badge', designed by Sylvia Pankhurst, was presented to members of the Women's Social and Political Union [WSPU] after serving prison sentences and known as the 'Victoria Cross of the Union'. Its design is that of the portcullis symbol of the House of Commons with a broad arrow (the convict symbol) in purple, white and green enamel superimposed.] This badge was presented to Edith Clayton Pepper by the WSPU in 1911 after her imprisonment. Also in the file are some explanatory notes on the 'Holloway badge' by Elizabeth Crawford from an auction catalogue of 2008 and from 'The Women's Suffrage Movement', UCL Press 1999.
