Paton Autograph Collection, 1835 - 1943
Scope and Contents
There are letters to E H Smith between 1892 and 1931; letters to the Patons (father and son) date from 1835 until 1932. Includes a catalogue of the autographs by E H Smith and related note from Peter [Petronella Smith] to Helen [Cam] 18 Oct 1943. The 'bazaar' referred to in Peter's letter is the Manchester and District Bazaar for Women's Suffrage, held in February 1912 (see letter from E E Constance Jones to E H Smith, 27 Jan 1912 - in file 'J' of the collection). Accompanying the letters/signatures is a book listing the names that are recorded in the collection. It is largely correct, however there are some omissions.

Biographical / Historical
The autograph collection appears to have been in the possession of E[mily] H Smith, (probably a relative of Peter Smith), and a number of the letters in the collection are written to her. However, the collection was titled the ‘Paton autograph collection’ and was most probably originally compiled by John Brown Paton 1830-1911 (Congregational Divine, Principal of the Congregational Institute for Theological and Missionary Studies, Nottingham), and his son, John Lewis Paton 1863-1946 (High Master of Manchester Grammar School 1902-24; President of Memorial University College, Newfoundland 1925-33). Their link to Emily Smith is unknown.
