Letters from Jessie White Mario to Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon, 1871 - 2006
Scope and Contents
Photocopies and Transcripts made by Katherine Littlewood of letters from Jessie Mario to Barbara Bodichon (and two to Nanny Leigh Smith) held in the Museo Centrale del Risorgimento Roma.
The letters date from 1871 to 1883, the majority being written in 1877. The letters concern Barbara Bodichon's health, the health of JWM's husband, Alberto, and news of mutual friends. Some of the letters in 1877 are about a conference in Geneva - the first International Abolitionist Federation (IAF) Congress at which JMW gave a paper. She describes meeting with James and Caroline Stansfeld, Elizabeth Blackwell and Mr and Mrs Butler [probably Josephine Butler] who were attending the Congress.
Included is an article by Anne Summers, 'Work in progress. Which women? What Europe? Josephine Butler and the International Abolitionist Federation' from History Workshop Journal 62, 2006, which gives context to the 1877 letters.
