Girton College laundry basket
Scope and Contents
A wicker laundry basket marked 'top chapel'; photographs of the laundry basket, along with another seven laundry baskets; and notes about the laundry baskets, written by Peter Sparks in April 2016.
Until c2000 each floor of each wing in College had a dedicated and named woven willow laundry basket for transporting both dirty and clean laundry. Each basket had wooden skids on the underside and most had ropes (extant on the 'Swiss' example) for pulling along the corridors. By 2016 only eight remained: five labelled for their corridors, two plain and one larger one (Swiss) for sending to and from the Swiss Laundry. 'Bot Wood' and 'Mid Old' probably represent the older standard type; the rest are later replacements in slightly different sizes and shapes.
