Both brooches belonged to Jean Silver (later Scott-Malden, Girton 1936-1939). Includes a copy photograph of Jean Silver, thought to have been taken during her time at Girton.

Biographical / Historical

Sue Churchman is the daughter of Jean Silver (later Scott-Malden, Girton 1936-1939). Jean Silver was born in 1917, daughter of Lt-Col. John Payzant Silver and Louie Mabel Drake-Brockman. She was educated at St Felix School, Southwold before coming up to Girton to read Modern and Medieval Languages in 1936. Her elder sister Ethel Irene Chamberlain Silver (later Mrs Fletcher-Jones) had also studied at Girton, 1921-1924. Whilst at Girton Jean played on the Lacrosse, Tennis and Cricket Teams. She was the Treasurer for the Tennis Club in 1937, and Captain of the Lacrosse Team 1938-1939. She also took part in some the College’s dramatic productions. On leaving Girton she took secretarial training and joined the WRNS [Women’s Royal Naval Service], becoming a Chief Petty Officer in I943. In 1941 she married I94I, Major Charles Peter Scott-Malden and had 2 daughters and 2 sons. According to her daughter she continued to play tennis into her fifties when she took up golf, which she continued to play into her eighties. She died in 2014.
