Winifred Hebe Prior was born in 1897 in Cambridge, the daughter of the Rev Charles Herman Prior, of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and Margaret Westcott. Educated at Sherborne School and Norwich High School, she studied history at Girton College 1916-1920. She married the Rev Geoffrey Gunnell Newman in 1923. Winifred died in 1994.
