Scope and Contents
Letters to Dorothy Needham from her husband Joseph Needham. Chiefly letters and postcards sent home by J N during visits abroad, giving detailed accounts of his activities. In the course of these visits the Needhams were prolific correspondents but no drafts or copies of Dorothy’s letters to her husband were found. 9 files as follows:
1) Telegram sent by J N from Osborne Laboratory, Newhaven, Connecticut, 25 September 1940, stating ‘Please reply whether all right’. The telegram is annotated ‘Merciful preservation we’ve had.’;
2) 1967 August. Corsica, Leeds;
3) 1977 June-July. Mexico, USA;
4) 1978 April. New York;
5) 1979 September-November. Switzerland, Hong Kong;
6) 1980 May. USA;
7) 1981 August-September. Rumania, China, Japan, Hong Kong;

9) 1984 August - September, China, Taiwan; 1986 May, West Germany; 1986 December, Japan.

Conditions Governing Access
Dorothy Needham's estate passed to her late husband Joseph. It is now held with his by the Needham Research Institute, 8 Sylvester Road, Cambridge CB3 9AF.
