Letters from Q D Leavis to Mary Pitter, 1949 - 1978
Scope and Contents
Transcripts of letters, including some letters from Q D Leavis to Mary Pitter's daughter, Celia. They are mostly of a domestic nature, touching on QDL's interests in cookery and household matters but they also mention frequently the matter of trying to carry on her academic work and teaching against a background of chronic illness, responsibility for household matters and children, her husband's ailments, and his refusal to have domestic help. Letters of the late 1950s and early 1960s refer frequently to the search for a more suitable house for the Leavis family to move to and the eventual move to 12 Bulstrode Gardens. A few of the letters are original manuscript letters (27 September 1965, June 1967, 27 September 1973, and 23 February [late 1970s?]). The ms letter of the late 1970s is from Mary Pitter to Kate [Varney, daughter of Q D Leavis] and mentions 'a collection of letters sent to me by both your parents during their lifetime'.
